This year, the west coast experienced a winter that was simultaneously disappointing and extraordinary in terms of weather. While the ski bums grumbled and resentfully watched Warren Miller movies at home, the bike community rejoiced. While no cyclist went so far as to remove their fenders altogether, the mild temperatures and unseasonably early spring made this winter a banner one for biking.
We at the Bike Doctor certainly noticed an up-swing in winter cycling enthusiasts. The usual number of rain capes and waterproof panniers went out the door, but so did bikes! Vancouverites might be known for being aloof and spandex-clad, but we’re also flexible – happy to forgo a winter of skiing if the trade-off is another season of enjoying trails and roads on two wheels.
So cheers, Vancouver! Here’s to adjusting our recreational habits and enjoying a continuous 365 days of solid riding.
