How to Scrap-It your car

The BC SCRAP-IT Program is a voluntary early retirement vehicle program that provides incentives to help British Columbians replace higher polluting vehicles with cleaner forms of transportation. The program is designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to lower exhaust pollutants across the province. All scrapped vehicles and their components are permanently and properly recycle

If you retire your 1995 or older vehicle, you will be able to choose from a long list of incentives including transit passes, bicycles, car sharing memberships, new or used cars, or $300 cash.

Who is Scrap-It?

The B.C. Scrap-It Program Society (www.scrapit.ca) is a not for profit society. It is not a provincial or federal government program.

Why scrap my older vehicle?

About five million personal cars and trucks still on the road were manufactured before 1996 when more environmentally conscious standards were introduced. According to Environment Canada, these pre-1996 models produce about 19 times more air pollutants than newer cars and trucks. Replacing a 1990 sedan with a 2009 hybrid can result in a reduction of up to 67% in greenhouse gas emissions.

Replacing a car with a bicycle is even better.

Am I eligible to receive a Scrap-It incentive?

To be eligible for the National Car Scrapping Program incentives, the personal vehicle (car, pick-up truck, minivan, or sport-utility vehicle) must be a 1995 or earlier model, must be in running condition, and must have been registered and insured by the current owner for at least the previous six months. Owners of vehicles not eligible for incentive rewards may receive a tax credit for the value of the scrap metal.

Can I really receive a bike worth up to $500?

When you follow the B.C. Scrap-It instructions to scrap your older vehicle, B.C. Scrap-It will subsidize your purchase of a new bike worth up to $500 with Bike Doctor. Scrap-It will give you 40% (up to $400) when your purchase your new bike, and--as an authorized B.C. Scrap-It dealer--Bike Doctor will give you a 10% discount (up to $100) at the time of purchase.

Once you apply, and get approved, you will receive an email approval letter from B.C. Scrap-it with more details about your new bike purchase.

STEP 1 – APPLY

Complete the Scrap-It application online. Fax or mail your (6 month continuous) vehicle insurance documentation. Copies of insurance documents can be obtained from ICBC. Please call them at 604-661-2800 or 1-800-663-3051.

STEP 2 – GET APPROVED

Wait for your approval email – it will arrive in about 2 business days from the day Scrap-It receives your complete application, this includes the insurance documents referred to in Step 1.

STEP 3 – CLAIM YOUR INCENTIVE

Your approval email will contain a link to all the information that you will need to claim an incentive. (Please note: Only one incentive may be claimed per vehicle scrapped).

STEP 4 – SCRAP YOUR VEHICLE

Your approval email will contain all the information that you will need to scrap your vehicle. Please note you have a maximum of 30 days to scrap your car and claim your incentive. You must scrap your car at an Authorized B.C. Scrap-It Scrap Dealers (PDF).
